In addition to the attachments required in the application form applicants who are not graduates of this University must submit an original transcript or certified copy of their academic record for all tertiary qualifications to date.

Important dates

  • Applications must be received at least six weeks prior to your intended commencement date.
  • You may commence the course on any day of the academic year, but you can only commence the coursework component at the start of a standard semester.

Course outline

This course enables students to simultaneously undertake a PhD (in their chosen discipline) and a Master of Forensic Science. Students will graduate with both a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Forensic Science.

The lectures for the Master of Forensic Science component of the course will primarily be held in the evenings to accommodate students conducting research or in full time employment. Please contact us for further information.

Master of Forensic Science Component

Students complete the following core units:

  • FNSC8611 Ethics and Research Methods in Forensic Science
  • FNSC8612 Forensic Anthropology I - Introductory Theory and Method
  • FNSC8613 Introduction to Forensic Chemistry
  • FNSC8619 Forensic DNA Analysis
  • FNSC8620 Expert Testimony
  • FNSC8623 Advanced Expert Testimony

Plus units to the value of 24 points from the following list:

  • FNSC8615 Death Investigations
  • FNSC8616 Forensics and Information Technology
  • FNSC8617 Forensics and Information Technology
  • FNSC8518 Forensic Science and Policing
  • FNSC8614 Forensic Archaeology - Theory and Method
  • FNSC8626 Forensic Anthropology II - Advanced Theory and Method
  • FNSC8618 Special Topic in Forensic Science

Doctor of Philosophy Component

After completion of the above units students must submit a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Refer to information provided by the Graduate Research School.

Credit for prior learning

If you have completed a similar subject, for example Forensic DNA Analysis, at another university, providing it was passed as part of an equivalent postgraduate course, you may apply for a credit for that unit. If you completed a similar unit as part of an undergraduate degree, you will not be granted an exemption.

Admission requirements

An honours degree of at least upper second class or equivalent, and completion of the first year of the course leading to the degree of Master of Forensic Science, and approval of a PhD proposal by the Board of the Graduate Research School.

When submitting your application you must also include a National Criminal Record History Check (no more than 12 months old) and proof of having had your tetanus vaccination.

All applicants for UWA courses must also demonstrate a minimum level of English Language Competence.
