We have five dedicated research groups and place a major emphasis on the postgraduate programs Graduate Diploma, Master, and Master/PhD of Forensic Science.

Each of these groups uses modern, state-of-the-art analytical equipment and methods in the quest for the further development of forensic science.

Forensic and Analytical Chemistry Group
This group regularly works with local, national and international law enforcement agencies, including on forensic casework and scientific reviews such as "cold cases". As well as this work, however, it also develops new tools for geochemical exploration and mineral beneficiation.
Forensic Entomology Group
Decomposition is the focus of this group; in particular, its researchers examine and analyse insects and associated arthropods that are involved in the decomposition of humans and carcasses.
Forensic Anthropology Group
As well as other related work, this group is developing a new generation of morphometric tools and standards for application in forensic identification in Australia and South Africa.
Forensic DNA and Microbiology Group
This group uses DNA profiling for both human and non-human applications, including animals, plants and microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria.
Jury Research Group
Unlike the other groups, which focus more on the scientific side of the field, this group is examining how jurors deal with forensic evidence, and the implications of this for lawyers and forensic practitioners.
Postgraduate research
Our postgraduate students are carrying out a variety of research work, including on criminal trial evidence, tracking viral transmissions, and using polyclonal antibodies from sheep milk as a tool against gastroenteritis.
